A Tipperary town is rewarded for hard work and dedication in keeping their town tidy

Fiona Flynn of Tipp County Council Environmental Office, Marie Moloney, Cahir Tidy Towns, Breda Gallagher Cahir Tidy Towns Chairperson, Minister Heather Humphries and Cahir Tidy Towns member Cllr Andy

Members of Cahir Tidy Town's headed for the National Tidy Towns results held in Croke Park, Dublin. With only 3 invitations this year, the team were sceptical with the outcome so the Chairman, Secretary and author of the entry headed off in anticipation.

Apart from the national competition there are individual projects that can be entered but do not have a bearing on the overall results, so it's all on the day.

The way the overall judging is done in category D is for towns between 2500-5000 people and you need to be within 10 points of the winner to get Gold, 15 for silver and 20 for a bronze.

With the winners Ballincollig on 386 we would need a huge result to hold our medal.

There was huge relief when we increased by 12 to give us a national standing of 366 to save our Bronze medal for another year.  The other categories entered gave us a Regional Youth Award and this year our Youth Tidy Towns Group led by Olivia Darcy and Andy Moloney picked up a Regional Award for their efforts during the year.

We also picked up a Regional Award in the Waters and Community section where efforts have been made on water filtration in areas of the town with our SUDs project. SUDs is a drainage solution that provide an alternative to the direct channelling of surface water through a network of pipes and sewers to nearby watercourses.

It was a great day out for the town where the public buy-in was evident in the adjudicators report and some recommendations were made for next year

Some painting of buildings and an update on the Novel eco and the allotments will be viewed next year on their progress.  The report is available on line to view in full and makes good reading.

On the domestic front, we will be hosting the SuperValu local awards sponsored by Dolans Super Valu on Saturday, November 16 at 8pm. We can confirm Santa’s Grotto will take place on December 7 & 8 and the Tractors in Lights Parade will be on Saturday, December 7 with registration in the Mart from 5pm, watch this space for more news to follow
