Electric Ireland Higher Education Freshers 1 Hurling League Final
University of Limerick 2-24
University College Cork 2-14
The University of Limerick continued to maintain their stranglehold over the Freshers 1 League title with a comprehensive win over University College Cork in Mallow on Tuesday evening, with the Tipperary contingent contributing 0-12 to the Limerick team’s victory.
Despite a slow start from the Limerick college where they trailed 1-5 to 0-3 after 14 minutes, a goal in the 15th minute from big Martin Murphy turned the game for UL as they completely took over and won the game pulling up.
For UL, four starters were from Tipperary with Darragh McCarthy, Jamie Ormond, Cathal English, and Conor Gleeson all on the teamsheet; the former three all had good games while Conor Gleeson was withdrawn in the first half after picking up an early yellow card.
Ormond and McCarthy were stationed inside for the first half and made decent hay in that time, with Ormond hitting two fine points from play with McCarthy was somewhat subdued early on but his free-taking throughout was flawless and while he didn’t score from play, he directly assisted in four points.
Cathal English was quiet in the first half but came to life in the second and fired over two well-taken efforts in what was an easy win for a star-studded Limerick outfit who won their third title in a row in this competition.
For UCC, Tadhg Sheehan was the sole starter for UCC and had a decent outing, particularly in the first half, but like the rest of his team, he struggled with the white waves in the second half.
