World champion Donnacha Keeley at Clerihan National School with Cllr John FitzGerald (left), school principal Denise Fleming and the Mayor of Clonmel, Michael Murphy
Clerihan National School was abuzz with excitement recently when former pupil Donnacha Keeley returned to celebrate a remarkable achievement.
Earlier this year Donnacha, who graduated from the school in 2016, won a gold medal at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in St Catherine’s, Canada, alongside his teammate Ciaran Purdy.
The duo claimed victory in the Under 23 Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls.
A member of Clonmel Rowing Club and a student-athlete at the University of Galway, Donnacha shared his journey with Clerihan school students and staff during a special assembly held in his honour.
The children, brimming with curiosity, asked Donnacha a range of thoughtful questions about his training, experiences, and the dedication required to achieve success at the highest level.
The assembly was attended by special guests, the Mayor of Clonmel Michael Murphy, and Councillor John FitzGerald, who joined the school community in celebrating Donnacha’s inspiring win.
To the children’s delight, the Mayor suggested a night off homework to mark the occasion, a proposal that, understandably, was met with cheers of approval!
Clerihan National School is incredibly proud of Donnacha Keeley, not only for his sporting achievements but also for being a wonderful role model for current students.
