North Tipperary Community Rail Partnership is organising its annual trip to Limerick on Ice again this year, and will take place from Nenagh on Thursday, January 2nd, and from Cloughjordan on Friday, January 3rd.
"This has been a fantastic community day out, especially for young families who want to experience their first train trip to Limerick on Ice," said organiser Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh.
She said the trip had become so popular that they have split the visits over two days, with people in Cloughjordan organising their own day out with the support of Elaine Baker from the North Tipperary Community Rail Partnership.
"While Cloughjordan and Nenagh has its own special day, anybody can join in the fun and participate on any day. The main thing is to have purchased a rail ticket to present at Limerick on Ice for the day you travel," said Cllr Morgan Walsh.
A return ticket costs €6 from any station along the line and entrance to Limerick on Ice is €15. The normal price for skating is €18 for a child and €20 for an adult.
"I want to thank Irish Rail, Limerick on Ice and Elaine for coming on board again this year." she said.
Cllr Morgan Walsh said that by taking part, people had proven there was a role for the rail line to play and that usage had increased because of this.
To take part in this year's trip, those travelling are asked to arrive at Nenagh station early to purchase their tickets. The train leaves Nenagh at 9.50am and departs Limerick at 5.10pm. Those travelling from Cloughjordan on Friday 3rd January, the train will depart Cloughjordan 9.34 am. It is less than 1km walk to Limerick On Ice from the train station and the skating will be from 12pm to 1pm.
Children should be accompanied by an adult, although it is possible for one parent to take responsibility for a group of children if their parents agree. Teenagers can participate on their own or in groups if their parents allow them to be in Limerick unaccompanied - as organisers we will not be accompanying the teenagers after the skating is finished. Further details about the skating itself can be found on the Limerick on Ice website.
The contact person for Cloughjordan is Elaine Baker on 087-1243588, and, for Nenagh please contact Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh on 087-6154146.
