The Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, Councillor Declan Burgess, has confirmed he will contest the upcoming Seanad elections in January.
Cllr Burgess, who was first elected to Tipperary County Council at the age of 23 in 2019 and re-elected on the first count in June's local election, has declared his candidacy for Fine Gael on the Seanad Industrial and Commercial panel.
He is nominated, endorsed and supported by the Credit Union Manager's Association.
Cllr Burgess said: "I believe I am well-positioned to make a meaningful contribution in Seanad Éireann. As a Senator, my goal is to champion a pro-business, pro-community agenda.
"I firmly believe that effective policy decisions should be informed by early-stage input from key sectors, ensuring that they truly reflect the needs of our communities.
"I will work tirelessly to ensure a sensible, creative and dynamic environment that will work for you in Seanad Eireann."
The Cashel-based representative has begun his campaign to secure a seat in the 27th Senate.
Cllr Burgess is canvassing for support from his colleagues across Ireland, including City and County Councillors, members of Dáil Éireann and outgoing Senators.
The ballot papers will be issued to the electorate on Wednesday, January 15 and the poll will close on Thursday, January 30.
Cllr Burgess expressed his commitment to empowering local government and creating policies that foster sustainable, resilient communities.
"I will champion legislation that promotes the growth of sustainable communities across Ireland. This includes protecting jobs and supporting SMEs, securing a new deal for our tourism sector, and advancing a food and drinks tourism strategy that supports Ireland’s rich offerings. I will negotiate a better deal for farm families and particularly for young farmers, ensuring they receive the support they deserve. It is vital that the next Government act on resourcing and empowering local authorities, this is a priority of mine," Cllr Burgess concluded.
