A Comeragh College student working to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among his peers, will represent Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club in the Young Ambassador of the 21st Century national final in January.
Finn McLoughlin was selected as Carrick-on-Suir’s Young Ambassador at an awards ceremony hosted by Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club in the Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre in Carrick-on-Suir.
Carrick Lions Club said all in the club wish Finn well in the All-Ireland final that will take place in Carlow on January 18.
He was one of seven students from local secondary schools who took part in the district final of the competition that recognises young people between the ages of 15 and 19 for their community service involvement, leadership accomplishments and speaking ability.
The programme encourages young people to see community service as an integral part of leadership skills.
Finn’s proposed project of the Young Ambassador competition is focused on young people and the drugs issue in Carrick-on-Suir.
He plans to organises speakers on this subject to attend Carrick-on-Suir’s three secondary schools to offer support and advice to students.
Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club members thanked the Young Ambassador competition judges, Myles Mitchell, Marian Daly and Mary McDonnell who had a very difficult task in picking the winner as all candidates were involved in terrific projects passionate to them.
Lions Shirley O’Shea and Stephanie Keating, who are the Club’s Young Ambassador officers, were also thanked for their hard work in this competition.
Last year’s winner of the Young Ambassador Award in Carrick was Jack Flavin from Portlaw a student from St Declan’s College, Kilmacthomas, who spoke at the event of his great experience attending a Young Ambassadors youth camp in Germany with 20 others last summer and how they immersed themselves in the local culture and customs while also visiting schools, historical sites and amusement parks.
Carrick Lions Club also presented a cheque at the event to Jake O’Dwyer for the Wheel Ability fund that purchases sports powerchairs for wheelchair users.
