Willie Coffey
Wilie Coffey was chosen as the All-Ireland Rugby League (AIL) Division 2A Player of the Year for his stellar performances during the 2023-24 season for Nenagh Ormond.
The Ballinree man was honoured following his key role in captaining the North Tipperary club to a first ever Division 2A title in a hugely successful season.
They had the title wrapped up with a game to spare and Willie’s last-minute try in their final game against Barnhall, when he rose to catch the ball and set off on a lung-bursting run before touching down, was the perfect way to sign off on an historic day for the club.
He had led from the front throughout the season, pestering opposition defences and producing exhilarating moments of pace, finesse, and raw skill.
His leadership had helped the club’s senior team make remarkable strides, gradually clawing their way back from a relegation play-off some years ago to become one of the most formidable forces in AIL rugby.
Willie's great year earned him an Annerville sports award. The awards, sponsored by Bulmers, will be presented by the Tipperary United Sports Panel at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel on Saturday, January 25.
Tickets for the event are available from Sports Panel member Ken Conway, email conwayken@eircom.net
