Deputy Michael Lowry
Michael Lowry has issued a statement regarding the influence he and his Regionl Independent Group had over the new Government programme.
The statement comes in light of he and his group's agreement to form part of the new government, which was agreed upon last night.
The agreement will see a number of junior ministerial roles open for members of the group to assume.
In his statement, Deputy Lowry said: "After a period of intense and robust negotiations, the Regional Group of Independent TDs have significantly influenced and reached agreement on a comprehensive Programme for Government. This agreement paves the way for Members of the group to enter a partnership Government.
"The Regional Group TDs have successfully shaped the Programme for Government, particularly in the areas of housing, health, disability, energy, agriculture and migration.
"The Independent TDs have been instrumental in ensuring that these critical areas receive the attention and resources they require and deserve. Addressing the cost of living with a disability and improving support for carers, was central to our discussions.
"The Regional Group successfully fought to ensure that the Programme for Government includes a clear message on the direction of energy security and renewable energy opportunities. Ensuring community access to renewable energy, grants and schemes is an important contribution from the Regional Group. Prioritising energy security, offshore energy projects and lower energy costs for families were of high importance. A key focus of our negotiations was to ensure that Government policy protected the family farm and the critical role of agriculture in our economy.
"Regional Group Members were instrumental in promoting balanced regional development, to ensure that all parts of Ireland benefit from economic growth and investment.
"The Regional Group also secured initiatives to support and promote the Irish language and the Gaeltacht, ensuring their preservation and growth.
"The Regional Group of TDs insisted on permanent supports for SMEs, including a reduction in VAT and a thorough review of the procurement process, to address the difficulties experienced by SMEs. The Group will actively advocate for the interests of SMEs in the budgetary process. The Group’s contribution to the review of the National Development Plan and our input to the HSE Capital Plan, will be central to our ongoing work within Government.
"The Regional Technical Group emphasised the need for a stable Government, underpinned by clear policy direction, for the next five years. The Group fully understands that this stability is crucial to effectively address the significant challenges facing the Irish people and our economy."
