The Cashel Young Person of the Year, Maeve Carroll, Garrandee, New Inn, was runner-up in the National Final of the Lions Clubs of Ireland Young Ambassador of the 21st Century Competition which took place in Carlow on Saturday, January 18.

Maeve impressed the judges during a very engaging interview dealing with her school and community involvement and with her plans for the use of a €1000 bursary. Maeve also delivered a speech to the assembled audience of Lions Club members, parents, family members and friends.

Maeve’s delivered her speech with passion and clarity. She moved the audience with her concern for the welfare of her local community and for the plight of those members of our community who face accessibility issues and with the challenges faced by the elderly in our community.

Maeve has developed a very impressive record of community activism and this is reflected in her leadership of the Student Council in Cashel Community School, her role as a member of the Links team in her school, her leadership of a prizewinning entry in the BT Young Scientist, her membership of a Tipperary under 16 camogie team that won a Munster Final and playing the fiddle with the Cashel Comhaltas group.

As part of her prize for being selected as Cashel Young Person of the Year, Maeve selected Cashel Day Care Centre as the recipient of a donation of €250 from Cashel Lions Club. Maeve presented a cheque from Cashel Lions Club to Marie Devitt from the Day Care Centre Committee at the Senior Citizens’ Party on Sunday, January 19.

Maeve was a very close second in the national final to Cian Martin representing Wexford Lions Club.

Cian’s community involvement revolved around his leadership of a School of Sanctuary project which focussed in promoting inclusion in his school and the development of a community sensory garden.

Cashel Lions Club congratulates Maeve on her performance at the national final of the Lions Clubs of Ireland Young Ambassador Competition.

The club compliments Maeve on giving so freely of her time to a range of projects and to this year’s competition and wish her every success and happiness in the future.
