A lot is expected of McCarthy at such a young age and it was a mixed bag for his first competitive start for Tipperary. As usual, he hit his frees fairly well despite the testing conditions in Galway and took his penalty brilliantly early in the first half.
Like Ormond, he worked very hard out of possession and was a good target throughout without dazzling from play.
Still, he set up some scores and got the full game against seasoned players in Fintan Burke and Jack Grealish.
