Tipperary County Councillor speaks out on proposed Tipperary wind farm

Tipperary County Councillor Jim Ryan has spoken out about the proposed wind farm set to be erected in Brittas, on the outskirts of Thurles.

The wind farm has been planned by Orsted, a Danish energy company, who have submitted their plans to An Bórd Pleanála, with a view to have the project completed and operational by 2028.

In opposition to these plans, a group of locals have banded together to protest these proposed plans.

Speaking in a post on social media, Cllr Ryan said: "It would appear that many people in Thurles are not aware that a Danish company, ORSTED, have submitted plans to An Bord Pleanala for the erection of 10 giant wind turbines in the Brittas-Clobana- Rossestown area. This will encompass both sides of the Dark road as well as both sides of the river Suir, including what appears to be at least two turbines in the existing flood-plain. These turbines will be amongst the highest ever erected in Ireland-some 185 metres high. This is the approximate equivalent of over six times the height of the Bridge Castle in Liberty Square.

"Other things that will be part of the development include: 4 kilometres of hedgerows to be removed and replaced with an unknown number of trees to be removed and replaced including in the historically-preserved Knox’s wood, Possible re-direction of the Suir; There will be traffic disruption on Jimmy Doyle road, Dark Road and Templemore Roads during the construction phase.

"These monster turbines will be within 3-4 kilometres of Thurles town centre. Locals are deeply concerned and have formed a group to oppose this intrusion on their lives and the local ecology. Any objections, called submissions. Must be submitted by February 14th Brittaswindfarmplanning.ie," he concluded.
