The famous Faugheen 50 Motorcycle Races return this July for the first time in three years and a bike and car run is taking place this Saturday to raise funds for the event.
Faugheen 50 Supporters Club is hosting the bike and car run that starts from Tinvane Retail Park off the Pill Road in Carrick-on-Suir at 2.30pm this Saturday, March 1 with registration of vehicles commencing at 1pm.
It costs €20 per vehicle to enter the run that will travel from Carrick to Rathgormack and onto Lemybrien before returning to Carrick and finishing in Faugheen.
Paul Power, PRO of the Faugheen 50 Supporters Club, said the proceeds from the event will go towards meeting the running costs of the Faugheen 50 Motorcycle Road Races that will take place on the roads around Faugheen village on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20.
The road races bring an estimated 5,000 motorcycle racing competitors, officials and spectators to Faugheen. They last took place in 2022 but weren’t run in the past two years as Motorcycling Ireland was unable to secure insurance for the sport.
Mr Power said Motorcycling Ireland secured insurance last year for motorcycle races for all other surfaces except road. So this year the Faugheen 50 Club and a number of other racing clubs left MCI and as a group secured insurance for the Faugheen 50 and three other road races in counties Limerick, Westmeath and Cork.
The club has received a lot of interest from motorcycle racing competitors from all over Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK in taking part in the revived Faugheen 50 races since their return was announced.
“It’s a huge plus to have the Faugheen 50 Road Races back this year. The event brings a lot of attention to the area and we have had great support over the years from the people of Carrick-on-Suir and Faugheen. We couldn’t run it without the support of the local community,” he said
