An application has been made for planning permission for a change of use from a public house to residential to accommodate apartments at Kate Ryan's, at the corner of William Street and Cashel Street.
For many years Kate Ryan's was one of the town's busiest establishements. As well as its loyal clientele, it was also a popular venue for social occasions such as christenings and birthday parties, and many other gatherings.
The bar and lounge were run for many years by Marian and Johnny O'Flaherty, and in recent times by their daughter Shauna Lambe and her husband Danny.
Its impending closure has been widely lamented.
Writing on social media, one person said "Ah God, the Friday nights listening to Fly Flynn (RIP) in Kate’s is something I will never forget. Great nights were had in Kate’s".
Another person stated, "Very sad day, Kate Ryan’s was a big part of Clonmel. But sadly it’s only one of many many businesses closing in this day and age. The Ireland of old is disappearing for our youth".
Another wrote, "Another couple of years and there won't be a pub left in the town. Very sad to hear Kate's is going".
This development follows the closure of many other pubs in the town in recent years, including O'Keeffe's nightclub, The Greyhound, Chawke's, Liam Daly's, Devane's and the bar at Hearns Hotel.
