Lecture to shine spotlight on Tipperary women emigrants in 19th and early 20th centuries

‘Friendships Highway: Assisting Irish Girls’ Friendly Society members as they emigrated from Ireland, c1885- 1935' is the title of the March lecture from the Tipperary People and Places series.

It takes place in The Source, Thurles on Tuesday, March 18 at 7pm.

Dr Martin Walsh, Project Officer for the Oral History Project at University of Limerick is currently digitising the records of the Irish Girls’ Friendly Society.

His talk will look at the girls who had a connection with Tipperary and what happened them after they were assisted by the society.

Martin’s research focuses on the visibility of working class women in England and in Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th century and the fears moralists had about their exposure to immorality.

All are welcome to hear about this unusual aspect of Irish history.
