Tractor engulfed in flames in Limerick as driver travels to co-op

The tractor burst into flames on Saturday morning

A farmer heading to a Dairygold Co-Op in Superstore in county Limerick to pick some supplies had to make a hasty escape after his tractor burst into flames.

No injuries have been reported to the tractor driver following the shocking incident on the L1152 between Pallasgreen and Old Pallas on Saturday morning around 10am.

Firefighters from Cappamore rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze, which according to one local "went up like a match".

Photos of the fire-engulfed tractor, with a bale handler on the back, have been widely shared on social media.

They show the extent of the fire damage. Plumes of thick black smoke wafted into the east Limerick sky.

One local said: "The heat off it was ferocious. The firefighters from Cappamore were on in jig-time in fairness to them. 

"The tractor was like a shell after it. It would have been worse again if he had a couple of bales on the back. Thank God nobody was hurt - that's the most important thing."
