Former Limerick hurling psychologist joins Paul O'Connell's Irish rugby management team

Former Tipperary hurling psychologist Caroline Currid has joined Paul O'Connell's Irish Rugby management team.

Limerick native O'Connell has taken over as interim head coach ahead of Ireland's summer tour against Georgia and Portugal on July 5 and 12. 

O'Connell has taken over from Andy Farrell, while Farrell takes charge of the British & Irish Lions this summer.

The Irish Examiner has reported this afternoon of Currid's new role with the Irish Rugby team. Limerick native Craig Casey will captain the Irish Rugby team on the summer tour. 

Gary Keegan has served as the Irish Rugby psychologist over the last while, Keegan is now working with the British & Irish Lions on their summer tour in Australia.

Caroline Currid has played a pivotal role in Limerick hurling’s remarkable achievements. The sports psychologist worked with the Shannonsiders in 2018 when Limerick ended their 45-year wait for the Liam McCarthy Cup. In 2019 she wasn't involved with John Kiely's set-up. 

Currid returned to the Limerick senior hurling setup from 2020 to 2023, a period during which the team won four All-Ireland titles and four Munster championships. In 2024, the Sligo native stepped away from the Limerick hurling set-up. 

Currid has won All-Ireland titles with the Dublin senior footballers, Tyrone senior footballers and the Tipperary senior hurlers. 

The current Limerick senior hurling team are yet to win an All-Ireland without sports psychologist Caroline Currid being involved in the backroom team.

Numerous Limerick senior hurlers have spoke about the impact Currid has left on the team. Joe O'Connor and Paul Kilgannon have worked in Currid's role as the Limerick hurling psychologist in the last two years. 

The former Sligo ladies footballer spent a year in a consultancy role with Johan van Graan’s Munster during the 2021/22 season.
