The presentation of the proceeds of the Barry McCarthy Memorial Swim Races to South Tipperary Hospice

The annual Barry McCarthy Memorial Swim Races in the River Suir in Carrick-on-Suir added €4,000 to the coffers of South Tipperary Hospice Movement.
The cheque for the proceeds of the popular swimming races was presented to South Tipperary Hospice at the 30th anniversary Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon on Sunday, July 27.
The races are organised by Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club every year to commemorate the late Barry McCarthy, a former chairman of the club who passed away in 2009.
It’s a popular event used by athletes as preparation for the Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon.
This year’s swim races took place on Saturday, July 19 – a week before the triathlon.
Swimmers from all over Munster and further afield competed in the 1,500m, 750m and 500m men’s and women's races in the River Suir at Seán Healy Park.
RESULTS
The 1,500m women’s swim race was won by Eibhlis Bartley of Waterford Triathlon Club with Andree Heslin of Tried & Tested Triathlon Club in Dungarvan in second place and Liz Nolan of Waterford Triathlon Club 3rd.
The 1,500m men’s swim race was won by Warren Roche, Waterford with Joseph Morgan, Fethard 2nd and Shane Molloy, Tramore 3rd.
Eibhlis Bartley completed a double in winning the 750m women’s swim race followed by Andree Heslin in second place and Marie Barry of Carrick-on-Suir Triathlon Club in third place.
Winner of the 750m men’s swim race was Warren Roche, Waterford; 2nd was Joseph Morgan, Fethard and 3rd was Finlay McHardy of Tried & Tested Triathlon Club, Dungarvan.
The 500m women’s race was won by Shelby Newsome, Carrick-on-Suir followed by Andree Hesling in second place and Leonie Mitchell of Dungarvan Aquatics in third place.
Winner of the 500 men’s swim race was Shane Molloy from Tramore. Warren Roche, Waterford was second and David Martin, Kilkenny was third.
The raffle was won by Tom Power. Garry McCarthy, twin brother of the late Barry McCarthy, thanked all who supported the swim races and helped raise funds for South Tipperary Hospice.
He specially thanked Carrick-on-Suir River Rescue and Carrick-on-Suir Kayak Club members for stewarding the river during the races.
Mr McCarthy also thanked the event’s sponsors including Orafol Waterford, Outfield Sports, Carrick-on-Suir Credit Union, Meany’s Shoes, John Hearn Hardware, Bourke’s Clothes Shop, Paul Tobin Butchers and Sean Kelly Sports Centre.
