Independent TD Seamus Healy has thrown his support behind the campaign to establish a Business Improvement District in Clonmel.
The Clonmel TD has described the proposed BID company as a “progressive initiative” which he fully supported.
He issued his statement in the wake of a meeting for Clonmel rate payer in the Talbot Hotel in Clonmel last week at which representatives of Sligo's Business Improvement District company outlined the improvements the company has brought to Sligo. Deputy Healy paid tribute to the Sligo BID company and executive for their support in developing Clonmel's BID proposal.
“As a longtime community activist, I have always taken the view that any individual of organisation working to improve their town or area should be encouraged and supported.
“It is with that outlook that I see support and welcome the proposal to establish a Business Improvement District company for the town by Clonmel business community and Town Team.
He said business footfall and vibrancy has declined significantly in Clonmel since the Covid pandemic and this was particularly due to online shopping and commerce.
“There is an urgent need to revitalise our town centre. This proposal allows businesses to fund and manage projects to improve Clonmel town making it busier and safer for residents and visitors alike.
He noted this type of development has been successful in other towns like Sligo and Drogheda and he hoped Clonmel call follow suit.
But he pointed out that the work of Clonmel BID, if it's established, will have to be supplemented and supported by government funding Urban Renewal Development Fund.
“Clonmel Borough District and Tipperary County Council have a significant and exciting proposal for Clonmel town centre renewal awaiting government funding.
“A partnership between Clonmel BID company, Tipperary County Council and national government can revitalise Clonmel.
