Tipperary village rallies to block 5G mast erected just steps from local school

In Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, a local dispute over mobile infrastructure has reached the courts. The community group Move the Mast is challenging the construction of a 15-metre 5G mast beside St Michael’s National School, and recently held a fundraiser to support legal costs.

The sponsored walk drew pupils, parents and teachers, raising €5,085. “We had a great turnout on the walk and a fantastic return on the cards,” said Viv Dooley, the school principal.

Eir’s mast has been approved by An Bord Pleanála despite local objections. Its proximity—just seven metres from the school building—has sparked concern. “We are not opposed to 5G masts in general,” said Move the Mast member Kerri Cleary. “But right next to the school, behind homes, next to a crèche, in the middle of Cloughjordan village is just not an appropriate place for it.”

Opponents also argue the project breaches Tipperary planning rules, which allow such masts near schools or homes only as a “last resort”. Lawyers for the group say a judicial review is underway. The process could take years, but a judge will ultimately assess whether An Bord Pleanála acted appropriately.

For now, Cloughjordan residents are preparing for a prolonged legal fight, funded by bake sales, raffles—and sponsored walks.
