The HSE says it will undertake a second recruitment campaign in the coming weeks for the post at Tipperary University Hospital
The post of Consultant Ophthalmologist in South Tipperary is being re-advertised, Deputy Michael Murphy has been informed.
The HSE engaged a full recruitment campaign for the post, Tara Hunt, General Manager-Primary Care, IHA Carlow Kilkenny and Tipperary South has stated.

"An interview board was set up and interviews undertaken, the result of which was one successful candidate. The successful candidate was appointed to the post in late July 2025; however, due to personal circumstances, (they) subsequently declined the post before the commencement date.

"The HSE will undertake a second recruitment campaign in the coming weeks and the post is being re-advertised in the Irish College of Ophthalmologists. I can also confirm that a business case for an Optometrist was submitted at the same time as the post for Consultant Ophthalmologist.
"In the meantime, parents can avail of Ophthalmology Services via the University Hospital Waterford, Ophthalmology Department," Ms Hunt added.
