An Garda Síochána in Tipperary have issued a reminder to hunters about the legal requirements surrounding access to land and compliance with wildlife protection legislation.
Gardaí are stressing that anyone engaged in hunting must first obtain the permission of the landowner or occupier before entering land for the purpose of hunting any wild bird or wild animal. They highlight that this requirement is set out under Section 44 of the Wildlife Act.
All hunting activities must be carried out in full compliance with the Wildlife Acts (1976 as amended) or under any licence issued in accordance with those Acts. Gardaí in Tipperary have made it clear that any breaches will be treated seriously.
Consequences may include the seizure of hunting equipment and vehicles, prosecution, conviction, and fines of up to €5,000.
Landowners are being urged to report all incidents of trespass on their lands. Such reports can be made either to their local Garda Station or directly to the Garda Emergency Numbers 999 or 112.
In the coming months, Gardaí will also be working closely with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to ensure the protection of wildlife from unlawful treatment.
