Tipperary library hosts exhibition of 'naive art' by local artist

Clonmel Library will host the exhibition from this Monday, October 13 until Saturday, October 25

Artist Frank O’Rourke from Ballymacarby will be holding an exhibition of his most recent paintings, kindly facilitated by Clonmel Library,  titled 'The Charm of the Naive'

Approximately 25 pieces will be on display for viewing in the style and subject of prehistoric cave painting and one of the fathers of naïve painting, LS Lowry.

Cave paintings represent the first known manifestation of artistic creativity mysticism and symbolism, providing a window to the lives of our ancestors and also their ability to create and use pigments that survive on walls to this day.

When Pablo Picasso first witnessed cave painting in France he said in wonder, “we have invented nothing”.

LS Lowry's works are in many ways complementary, nakedly honest and humble while groundbreaking with his representation of everyday ordinary life, often in working class and industrial environments.

Naïve art is now widely appreciated for its honesty, lack of pretentiousness and rawness. It dresses a wall with an image that can deeply interact with the beholder and is said by many to be more loved and appreciated  over time as a must-keep piece.

The exhibition runs in Clonmel Library from this Monday, October 13 until Saturday October 25.
