New Rotary Club of Clonmel president, Richie Molloy, hopes to expand the membership of the club during the coming year.

“My hope is to grow the club over the next few months. I plan to hold an open night to explain what the Rotary organisation is all about, and to encourage new members to join,” he said following his election to succeed outgoing president Seamus Ryan.

The new president is widely known throughout the town and county through his leadership role with the Carers Association, and as a member of Tipperary County Council. He is also a former Mayor of Clonmel.

Mr Molloy said that his primary focus is to maintain the huge level of support that the Rotary club provides to organisations in town, as well as internationally.

“Last year the club raised over €30,000 for deserving causes and I hope to continue with that work. Great credit is due to outgoing president Seamus Ryan for his role in that effort,” he said.

He added – “I am very honoured to be elected president of the club and conscious of the role that it plays in the town and has done for well over fifty years. We have great members and I hope to build on that number following our open meeting, when I will encourage new people to join”.

Another project scheduled for the coming year is to hold an awareness day on the dangers of excessive speed on the road for the students of all secondary schools in Clonmel.

“We need to create an awareness among young people of the dangers on the road. Tipperary County Council will also be involved in this project,” he said.

Other activities during the coming year include fundraising for local causes, including the Remembrance Tree at Christmas; the annual golf classic, Young Writers and Youth Leadership initiatives and many other projects.

Mr Molloy said he is delighted to have incoming vice-president Ian Bowen on his team, along with secretary Fil Guido and treasurer Bill Roche.

Rotary’s motto is ‘Service Above Self’ and Mr Molloy said that he and the entire membership will strive to live up to that ideal during the coming year.
