One in every 21 households in Tipperary received a grant for solar panels between 2020 and June 2025, new research by EnergyEfficiency.ie has revealed.
The analysis, based on SEAI and Census data, shows a steady rise in solar PV adoption each year, with 2,922 home solar installations completed in total. Of those, 1,016 were carried out in 2024 alone, compared to just 111 in 2020.
From 2020 to June 2025, the average home solar system size increased by 58% from 4.15 kWp to 6.54 kWp. For context, a modern 6 kWp system typically includes around 14 panels.

Some €6.63 million was awarded under the SEAI’s Solar PV Scheme to help homeowners with installation costs, while Tipperary households invested over €32.8 million in solar systems, including battery storage.
The total grant-assisted home solar capacity in Tipperary was over 17,000 kWp in June 2025, the 8th highest in Ireland.
Nationally, there were over 81,000 Solar PV Scheme grants awarded, with over €914 million spent by households on home solar panels.

“Ireland is making strong progress in renewable energy, with households installing larger solar systems than ever before,” said Briain Kelly of EnergyEfficiency.ie.
“Our analysis shows that solar uptake has risen sharply despite reductions in grants over the past two years. This is being driven by falling installation costs, rising energy prices, and growing awareness of the benefits of solar.
“Many homeowners with solar save over €1,000 a year on their energy bills, and with several energy companies increasing rates this month, we expect even more households to make the switch in the coming year.”
