A native of Borrisokane, John ‘Mackey’ McKenna was a towering figure in both club and county colours, his name forever etched among the golden generation of Tipperary hurling in the 1960s.
Renowned for his skill, courage and commitment, he was part of the legendary Tipperary teams that dominated that era, winning four All-Ireland senior hurling medals in 1961, 1962, 1964 and 1965.
McKenna also captured six Munster senior medals (1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968) and four National League titles (1961, 1964, 1965 and 1968), while he lined out with Munster to claim a Railway Cup medal in 1966.
At club level, his loyalty to Borrisokane GAA never wavered. He was central to their North Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship victories in 1958 and 1973, achievements cherished by the club and community alike.
