Tipperary GAA club appeals quarter-final loss after penalty shoot-out controversy

Moyne Templetuohy have lodged an appeal over their loss to Solohead in the Junior B Hurling Championship quarter-final last Saturday in Drombane, after being allowed to take only four penalties while Solohead were given five.

The match ended level at 1-22 apiece after extra-time. It’s understood Moyne Templetuohy mistakenly listed the wrong player among their designated penalty takers, and the referee refused to allow a correction.

Both sides converted one penalty in the initial round of the shoot-out - Solohead scoring one from five and Moyne-Templetuohy one from four - before Solohead prevailed in sudden death.

Reports suggest that the Moyne Templetuohy player they intended to take a penalty had been on the pitch at the end of extra-time, which is a key eligibility requirement for penalty shoot-outs.

According to competition rules, a team may only alter its list of five penalty takers (other than the goalkeeper) if one of them is sent off during the shoot-out.

In such cases, that player can be replaced by someone who was on the field when extra time ended, with the referee’s approval. A goalkeeper may also be substituted if injured.

Solohead’s victory sees them advance to the Tim Maher Cup semi-finals, joining Carrick Swans, Silvermines, and Thurles Sarsfields.
