Restrictions imposed on Tipperary bus service after reports of anti-social behaviour

TD Michael Murphy urges review as Gardaí say no incidents were reported locally

Restrictions imposed on Tipperary bus service after reports of anti-social behaviour

In South Tipperary concerns over anti-social behaviour in Clonmel have led TFI Local Link to alter the route of the 356 bus service after 5pm. Residents in the Old Bridge and Raheen Road areas have reportedly been involved in incidents in which eggs, stones, and bottles were thrown at the vehicle, resulting in at least one broken window.

In response, buses will no longer stop at Old Bridge and Raheen after 5pm, instead proceeding directly to the Showgrounds. Michael Murphy, local TD, has expressed concern over the impact this change could have on the community.

“This morning I wrote to the General Manager asking him to reconsider this suspension along the 356 route. I fully appreciate the operators concern around driver and passenger safety but I’m also equally concerned the impact of this decision on the residents of the Old Bridge and Raheen area, many of whom rely on this service for access to work, education and other essential connections,” he said.

However, the incidents described by the bus operator appear to have caused some confusion. Deputy Murphy revealed that Clonmel Gardaí have not received reports of the attacks.

“I’ve since been in touch with the local Garda Superintendent who has confirmed to me that no incidents matching those described in the correspondence were reported to An Garda Siochana. I’m asking the Local Link general manager to reconsider this decision. I’m very hopeful that the service will be reinstated next week and I’ve made him aware that I’m happy to facilitate further communication between their office in Waterford and An Garda Siochana here in Clonmel. It’s so important that we continue to provide this local service,” he added.

The suspension has prompted calls for urgent dialogue between the bus service and local authorities, with residents awaiting a resolution that would restore full access to the 356 route.
