DENIED: Moyne Templetuohy's appeal rejected after County quarter-final penalty controversy

Moyne Templetuohy’s appeal over their dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to Solohead in last weekend’s Tipperary Junior B Hurling Championship quarter-final has been rejected.

The club lodged the appeal after being permitted to take only four penalties in the shoot-out while Solohead were allowed five. The match, played in Drombane, finished level at 1-22 apiece after extra-time before Solohead advanced to the semi-finals.

It is understood Moyne Templetuohy had mistakenly listed the wrong player among their designated penalty takers and the referee did not allow a correction once the list had been submitted.

Both sides converted one penalty each in the initial round, with Solohead scoring one from five and Moyne Templetuohy one from four, before Solohead won in sudden death.

Moyne Templetuohy argued that the player they had intended to include was eligible, having been on the pitch when extra-time ended, but the appeals committee ruled that the referee had applied the regulations correctly.

Under the competition rules, a team may not amend its list of penalty takers except in the case of a dismissal during the shoot-out or if the goalkeeper is injured and requires replacement.

Moyne Templetuohy can, if they wish, take the matter further and appeal the decision to the Tipperary Appeals Committee.

For now, the decision confirms Solohead’s progression to the Tim Maher Cup semi-finals, where they join Carrick Swans, Silvermines and Thurles Sarsfields.
