Community-built haunted house hailed as triumph of creativity, spirit, and local pride

Screamland draws 450 visitors on opening night in Tipperary spooktacular Halloween hit

Cashel’s three-night Halloween attraction, Screamland, proved a runaway success last week, drawing more than 450 visitors on its opening night.

The haunted house experience, which ran from October 30 to November 1, transformed part of the town into a maze of eerie soundscapes, flickering lights, and jump scares that rivalled professional attractions elsewhere in the country.

Created by local community group Le Chéile Cashel, Screamland featured nine themed rooms, each with its own unique design — from witches’ lairs and butcher shops to unsettling dolls and dark surprises lurking behind every corner.

The team devoted hundreds of volunteer hours to building, painting, and decorating the attraction, ensuring an immersive experience that had guests both screaming and smiling in equal measure.

Organisers said the event was designed for “people of all ages”, with visitors ranging from three years old to their eighties taking part. “This has something for people of all ages,” one organiser said. “The attention to detail is phenomenal, and the atmosphere will be electric.” Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the event as one of Cashel’s best Halloween celebrations in years.

Local councillor Liam Browne hailed Screamland as a triumph for creativity and community spirit. “Screamland… not all heroes wear capes!” he said. “The first night is down, and over 450 people passed through the doors, making it a huge success.”

Browne paid particular tribute to Padraig Maher, his son Conor, and Stephen Walsh, whose construction work “to the highest quality” provided the foundation for the entire event.

He also extended his thanks to Christy and the full Le Chéile Cashel team, noting their “heroic” effort in turning the idea into reality. “Their creativity, commitment, and community spirit have brought something to Cashel that rivals any Halloween attraction in the country, and at a fraction of the cost,” Browne said.

Screamland’s success, he added, challenges the old complaint that “there’s never anything to do in town.” Instead, it showcased what can be achieved when local people come together.
