The Browne family of Grangemockler and renowned poet Máire Mhac an tSaoi were the themes of Conradh na Gaeilge’s Dúchas Irish language cultural day in Carrick-on-Suir's Nano Nagle Community Centre.

Anraí Mac Seoigh, Chairperson of Carrick-on-Suir’s Craobh Ó hIcí Conradh na Gaeilge branch, welcomed those in attendance from near and far to the event on October 11 that included talks and a field trip.

One of the original founders of Dúchas, Seán O’Duibhir opened the éigse and gave a short account of its history since it started in 1983 in Cashel.

Dúchas is hosted by different branches of Conradh na Gaeilge in county Tipperary every year.

Séamus de Paor from Grangemockler gave an interesting talk on the Browne family of Grangemockler, whose most noted member was Cardinal Michael Browne (1887-1971). Tomás Ó Muirí chaired the session.

Dúchas attendees then went to Grangemockler to see the house and farmyard of the Browne family.

Walter de Paor impressed them with his vast knowledge of the Browne family and their enterprises. The trip ended with lunch in the Cardinal Browne Hall, located in the old school building where Cardinal Browne’s father Muiris de Brún taught.

On the group’s return to the Nano Nagle Centre, the poet Louis de Paor gave an interesting talk on Máire Mhac an tSaoi and her poetry. Eibhlín Uí Mhorónaigh was chairperson for this session. A lively discussion and refreshments followed the talk.

Irish language version of article

D’eagraigh Craobh Ó hIcí Dúchas i mbliana in Ionad Nano Nagle. Is é an téama a bhí á phlé ná “Muintir de Brún Gráinseach Mhoicléir agus Máire Mhac an tSaoi” (iníon Mháiréad de Brún).

Tar éis cupán tae agus soláistí chuir Anraí Mac Seoigh, Cathaoirleach Chraobh Ó hIcí, fáilte roimh an lucht éisteachta a tháinig ó chian agus ó chóngar. Bhí slua deas i láthair.

Ansin d’oscail Seán Ó Duibhir, duine de bhunaitheoirí, Dúchas. Thug sé cuntas gearr ar stair na héigse a bunaíodh i 1983. Reachtáltar an éigse i mbailte éagsúla sa chontae i mí Dheireadh Fómhair.

Thug Séamus de Paor ó Ghráinseach Mhoicléir caint suimiúil ar Mhuintir de Brún. Bhí Tomás Ó Muirí sa chathaoir. Ansin thugamar cuairt ar Ghráinseach Mhoicléir agus teach mhuintir de Brún. Thug Walter de Paor an eolas dúinn faoin gclann agus na gnóchlachtaí a bhí acu. Dítheamar lón i halla an Chairdinéil de Brún (an seanscoil ina raibh Muiris de Brún ina mhúinteoir).

D'fhilleamar ar Ionad Nano Nagle áit a raibh an file Louis de Paor ag feitheamh linn. Thug sé caint an shuimiúil ar an bhfile Máire Mhac an tSaoi. Eibhlín Uí Mhorónaigh a bhí sa chathaoir. Tar éis Tae, caife agus comhrá scar an comhluadar.
