At 4:21pm, the lifeboat Jean Spier launched with helm Owen Cavanagh, navigator James Corballis, and crew Paraic Slattery on board. Conditions on the lake were calm, visibility fair, but dusk was approaching, and nightfall was imminent.
Thirteen minutes later, at 4:34pm, the lifeboat located the vessel in distress. Volunteers established that all three people were unharmed and wearing lifejackets.
Given the remote location, fading light, and bitterly cold conditions, the decision was made to tow the boat to safety.
By 5:05pm the vessel was secured alongside Kilgarvan Quay. The lifeboat departed at 5:15pm and returned to station at 5:30pm.
Commenting on the callout, Jeremy Freeman, Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI, emphasised the importance of preparedness. He advised boat owners to maintain well-serviced engines and carry an alternative means of propulsion.
He added that anyone encountering difficulty on the lake or witnessing others in trouble should dial 999 or 112 or use VHF radio channel 16 to contact the Coast Guard.
