A teenager from County Laois has appeared before Nenagh District Court charged in connection with a garda pursuit during which the stolen car he was allegedly travelling in hit speeds in excess of 200km/h.

Ryan Colgan, aged 18, of Railway Muse, Portarlington, County Laois, is charged with dangerous driving under Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act and with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.

The alleged pursuit entered north Tipperary, travelling through the county before ending near Birdhill.

During a procedural hearing, Judge Marie Keane was told directions are being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions and Sergeant Regina McCarthy requested an adjournment of the case until next month.

The dangerous driving incident is alleged to have occurred close to the Limerick/Tipperary border at Annalholty, Newport on January 9 while the vehicle - a white Skoda Octavia - was stolen from a property at Doon in County Limerick the previous day.

While details of the alleged offences were not outlined during the brief court sitting, gardai previously confirmed the stolen car was detected in Laois before it allegedly travelled at high speed along the M7 motorway in the direction of Tipperary.

The car is alleged to have passed through the toll plaza at Portlaoise while being pursued by gardai and it was subsequently involved in a collision near Birdhill in Tipperary.

Two youths were arrested by investigating gardai in the early hours of January 9 and a garda car is understood to have sustained minor damage during the incident.

Mr Colgan, who was refused bail when he first appeared in court, appeared before Nenagh District Court via video link, represented by solicitor Liz McKeever.

Addressing her client, the solicitor said it would be to his benefit if he agreed to Sgt McCarthy's request for a one month adjournment.

The defendant was remanded in continuing custody and is due to appear before the court again on February 13.
