Dean Maxwell families have welcomed the publication of the HSE Capital Plan for 2026 which has given an explicit commitment to progressing a new 50-bed community nursing unit to replace the current Dean Maxwell nursing home in Roscrea.
A spokesperson commented: “Against the backdrop of the threatened closure of the Dean Maxwell nursing home—in the context of 21st century residential care building standards—families have mounted a campaign for a number of years now to seek a commitment to build a new replacement nursing home in the town.

“We wanted to spare current residents of the home the trauma of being dislodged from their community and scattered far and wide to other nursing homes. We also wanted to ensure that our older people who might require residential care in the future would continue to be able to call Roscrea home, with ready access by family and friends in visiting, and their own family GP for their ongoing care.
“The new facility will not only replace, but double, the existing number of beds at the Dean Maxwell, so crucial in terms of forward planning for our increasing older population in the town and surrounding areas.
“Families will be meeting with the HSE in the coming weeks to discuss next steps in making the new home a reality.
“We want to ensure that residents, families and staff continue to be engaged at every step of the process, to ensure that the new facility is a home from home, and that the caring and community ethos of the Dean Maxwell continues to thrive in its new location.

“Families would like to thank our local TDs and councillors for their vital support with this campaign and for advocating for the capital funding to be made available, as well as thank the wider community for its unstinting support.
“We wish to thank all the staff of the Dean Maxwell nursing home for the exemplary care that they provide to our loved ones, which is so much appreciated.
“Finally, we wish to thank the HSE Mid West Regional Executive Officer, and her colleagues, for taking the concerns of families on board and for championing our cause nationally to get to this key milestone.”
