Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society and Brewery Lane Theatre mourn the death of Mickey Butler

Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society and Brewery Lane Theatre mourn the passing of Michael (Mickey) Butler of Castle Park, Carrick at the age of 95.

Mr Butler died at Waterford University Hospital on February 11 following a short illness.

Carrick Musical Society and Brewery Lane Theatre both paid tribute to Mickey and his brother Christy for building the 360-seat Strand Theatre in the 1970s, which served as the town’s cinema for many years as well as home of Carrick MS productions up to this day.

Brewery Lane Theatre said Mickey enjoyed a long and fulfilling life having joined the team at Miloko as an electrician in the early 1950s, shortly after the factory was built.

“He was a living archive of stories and memories from that era and shared the wisdom of the many eclectic mix of characters who worked alongside him.”

“Mickey was a dedicated patron of Brewery Lane, supporting the arts throughout his life.

“His wife, Eileen, was a cast member of the theatre’s first production in 1955 and remained involved ever since.

“Mickey was known for being calm, thoughtful and well-travelled, making him a pleasure to talk with.

“His absence leaves a significant void in his family, community, and friends, who cherish the legacy of his long and meaningful life.”

In its tribute, Carrick Musical Society said it was “saddened to learn” of the death of its past member and decades long patron.

It recalled that Mickey was a member of the Society in the 1950s and took part in productions like The Belle of New York in 1957.

“Mickey was a long standing dedicated patron of ours, always supporting us and the arts in Carrick. He was also one of life’s gentlemen in every sense of the word and will be greatly missed by the community.”

Carrick Musical Society and Brewery Lane Theatre extended condolences to his wife Eileen, sons Peter, Michael, Conor and Evan, grandchildren, daughters-in-law and the extended Butler and McGrath families. Solas na bhFlaitheas da anam dílis.
