Minister James Browne was in Nenagh and Roscrea on Friday to visit a number of local housing related projects in the area.
His first stop marked a watershed moment for Nenagh with the commencement of works on a complete upgrade of the Nenagh Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a project that has been the subject of many local council discussions and one that is set to enable significant growth and investment across the region.
The €49 million once in a generation project will deliver a modern wastewater treatment plant at the heart of the town. It will transform the current outdated facility, originally built in the 1980s, into fully reimagined infrastructure using modern technology that will ensure full compliance with Irish and EU environmental legislation.

For Maria O’Dwyer, Infrastructure Delivery Director at Uisce Éireann and a native of Tipperary, it was a proud day.
“This project represents a powerful investment in Nenagh’s future. As this region continues to expand, our wastewater infrastructure must rise to meet that momentum. This critical investment will not only safeguard the local environment but will unlock essential capacity to support the building of new homes. It is a vital step in ensuring Nenagh can continue to thrive while protecting its natural environment,” she said.
“We are committed to delivering for communities across Tipperary and this project is part of our ongoing multi million euro investment in wastewater infrastructure across the county. This includes recently completed projects in Newport, Ballina and Cahir, as well as the upgrade underway at Fethard and in Kilsheelan where planning permission was recently granted. This is critical to facilitate housing and growth while protecting our environment.”
The Minister’s next stop was another Nenagh project that is now well on its way to completion, the new housing estate at Tyone.
The 340 homes being built in Tyone were welcomed by local TD Alan Kelly this week, who confirmed that 340 housing units have been approved for the development. The project by Whitebox Developments will include:
The housing development is progressing well, with many homes nearing completion and on sale dates expected in the first half of this year.
In Roscrea, Minister Browne viewed the ongoing construction at the Grove Street Housing Development, a local authority scheme comprising nine units. He also participated in the sod turning ceremony at the Ashbury site for a ten unit local authority scheme, marking the beginning of construction.
The Minister finished his visit at Radharc na Carraige in Glencarrick, Roscrea, where a 47 unit local authority development is currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2026.
After many years of stalled construction in this part of the county and with many locals in need of housing, this progress represents a welcome boost for the area.
There will now be strong local interest in the cost of these homes and in how accessible they will be for those currently on social housing waiting lists.
