Tipperary County Council has reported that its flood defences performed well during the recent period of intense rainfall. Although several roads were temporarily closed due to water, homes and businesses avoided serious flooding.

Brian Beck, Director of Services and Carrick-on-Suir District Manager, said the council had been concerned as the rain persisted. In the end, however, he described the county’s outcome as relatively fortunate.

The local authority is now reviewing its plans for extreme weather, following weeks in which the risk of flooding appeared high but ultimately subsided.

Despite repeated warnings from Met Eireann, the heaviest rainfall largely missed Tipperary, affecting other parts of the South East instead.

Mr Beck emphasised that climate change is bringing more frequent extreme weather events, each presenting new challenges for planning and response.

He warned that Tipperary’s flood defences might not withstand rainfall on the scale seen in Enniscorthy at the end of last month.

He added that while no plan can address every possible scenario, the council is working to anticipate and prepare for the worst, in order to protect the county’s communities.
