The team received a call from An Garda Síochána at approximately 2.36am requesting help for two campers at Coumshingaun, a popular hiking location in the Comeragh Mountains near the border with County Tipperary.

One of the campers had become ill and needed assistance getting safely down from the mountain. Team members made their way to the mast at Kilclooney to begin the search operation.

Search dogs Ziggy and Rosie from the Search and Rescue Dog Association (Ireland) also responded to the call, working alongside their handlers Mick and Helen.

Fortunately, the unwell camper had already begun making their way towards the car park and was quickly located by the first rescue team members on the hill.

The casualty was assessed by the team doctor before being transferred to an ambulance from the National Ambulance Service for further treatment.

Meanwhile, other members of the rescue team continued up towards the lake to locate the second camper. They assisted with packing up equipment and helped carry gear off the mountain.

All involved were safely off the hill by 5.42am.

Despite the overnight operation, rescuers described the conditions as memorable, with clear skies and a bright moon over the Comeraghs.

Team members said it was a “marvellous night for a moon dance”, adding that after weeks of rain and grey skies, the clear night provided a striking backdrop as the rescue unfolded.
