Tipperary head into the final round of Allianz Hurling League Division 1A knowing their fate is not entirely in their own hands, but with a clear, if challenging, path still open to a place in the league final.
With Limerick hurling team and Cork hurling team currently leading the way on eight points, and Tipperary hurling team and Galway hurling team sitting just behind on six, the permutations are finely balanced heading into Saturday evening’s decisive fixtures.
The starting point is straightforward. Tipperary have to beat Kilkenny hurling team in FBD Semple Stadium. Anything less, and their interest in the race for the final ends immediately.
Victory would bring them to eight points, putting them level with at least one of the current top two. But that alone will not be enough.
In Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork face an Offaly hurling team side already relegated. A win or draw for Cork secures their place in the final.
Realistically, Tipperary will be working on the assumption that Cork win. If that happens, one final spot remains up for grabs.
The clash between Limerick and Galway is where Tipperary’s hopes will ultimately be decided.
If Limerick avoid defeat, they qualify alongside Cork, and Tipperary are eliminated regardless of their own result.
So for Tipperary, there is no ambiguity: they need Galway to beat Limerick.
Should Galway defeat Limerick and Tipperary overcome Kilkenny, three teams, Limerick, Galway, and Tipperary, will all finish on eight points.
At that stage, scoring difference determines who progresses.
And this is where the scale of Tipperary’s challenge becomes clear.
Tipperary currently trail Limerick by 30 points on scoring difference, and Galway by 26. To bridge that gap in a single game against Kilkenny, while also hoping Galway do not significantly boost their own difference against Limerick, looks highly improbable.
For Tipperary to reach the final, the following would need to happen:
Beat Kilkenny convincingly, and by a much bigger margin than Galway beat Limerick
Galway defeat Limerick, but not by enough to protect their own scoring difference advantage
The combined swing in results would have to wipe out a deficit of over two dozen points
In short, Tipperary need both results and a dramatic scoring swing.
So, Tipperary can still make the Allianz League final, but they require a near-perfect storm.
