The newly-refurbished public toilets at the Market Yard in Tipperary Town were discussed at the Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District meeting on Monday, March 23.
Sinn Féin Councillor Annemarie Ryan raised questions about the new 40 cent card-only charge for the toilets, asking whether it could be reduced to 20 cent.

She also asked why cash could not be accepted, noting that the card-only system might be a deterrent for some older residents.
Councillor Ryan praised the project for its improvements, particularly the universal ‘Changing Places’ facility, which she said would be of significant benefit to the town.
A council representative explained that the general toilets cannot be open 24 hours due to the risk of vandalism, but the universal changing room is accessible at any time to Radar key holders.
The daily opening hours for the public toilets are 8:30am to 7pm. The representative added that card-only payment helps protect the facility from theft and damage.
The refurbishment project was funded by Tipperary County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which provided a grant of €250,000.
The works were carried out by Quinn Perry Construction and included three individually accessible toilet stalls, one of which is wheelchair accessible and features baby changing facilities.
The project also includes a fully equipped ‘Changing Places’ facility. This unit features a toilet, hoist, washbasin, height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench, shower, and ample space to accommodate people with a range of disabilities who may require assistance.
‘Changing Places’ facilities are designed to meet the needs of individuals with complex care requirements and allow them to participate more fully in everyday activities.
The discussion at the municipal district meeting highlighted the council’s efforts to balance accessibility, security, and convenience for residents and visitors.
The refurbished toilets and the universal changing facility are expected to provide a modern, safe, and inclusive amenity for the town. More details are to follow about the official opening this week.
