Tipperary public representative Cllr Richie Molloy has met with Sean Kelly MEP in Brussels, where he highlighted the vital role of family carers.
He urged the Fine Gael MEP to support a move for the means test for carers be abolished during the current government’s term and that the Carer’s Allowance be made exempt from income tax.
Cllr Richie Molloy has tabled a motion for the April meeting of Tipperary Council Meeting calling for support for his motion to exempt Family Carers from income Tax.

Cllr Molloy said Family Carers are the only social welfare recipients that have to actually work for their payments.

“In most cases, they are caring on a 24/ 7 basis and save the State millions of Euros each year.
In the present climate, Carers are facing savage heating bills, and the cost of motoring has never been higher. Exempting Family Carers from income tax would go some way in supporting carers on the carers allowance weekly payments,” said Cllr Molloy.
