The distressing case of a “terrified” homeless woman who is sleeping rough at night on the streets of Clonmel after losing her place in the local night-time emergency accommodation, was highlighted by the town's mayor at a Tipperary County Council meeting on Monday.

Cllr Pat English told the council's April meeting he had been contacted by a lady who lost her place in Clonmel's 9-to-9 accommodation and had been sleeping rough in Clonmel for the past four to five days.

The Workers & Unemployment Action Group councillor said she had stayed at the 9-to-9 service that provides a bed, showering facilities and food to homeless people between the hours of 9pm and 9am for nine weeks up to losing her place.

He asked council management if there was any alternative B&B accommodation she could stay in. “She is terrified and out on her own in the cold and wet on the streets of Clonmel,” the mayor added.

The Council's Director of Housing Jonathan Cooney asked Cllr English to contact him after the council meeting to give him more specific details so he could look into the case.
