Carrick-on-Suir Town Hall where the meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District councillors took place
Tipperary County Council is making moves to finally develop the 23-acres landbank it has owned for years off Carrick-on-Suir's Coolnamuck Road, it emerged at Carrick Municipal District's latest monthly.
Shaun Lonergan of the Council's Housing Section informed the meeting that the Council's architect was looking at the Coolnamuck landbank in Carrickbeg and it's envisaged there will be some social housing on that site.
He said the Council was looking to meet the “best need” for the area and the elected members should “feel free” to contact the Council if they saw any sites they believed may be suitable for housing development in the district.
The executive engineer made his comments in response to Carrick MD Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne from Carrick-on-Suir, who requested an update on the Council's plans for the Coolnamuck landbank. The Sinn Féin councillor reminded council management how local councillors have been trying to progress the development of the landbank for a long number of years.
Fellow Carrick Cllr Kieran Bourke thanked Mr Lonergan for the update and agreed with Cllr Dunne. He reminded council management the Coolnamuck land was purchased by the former South Tipperary County Council when Ned O'Connor was its manager. (Mr O'Connor retired in 2011).
The Fianna Fáil councillor queried Mr Lonergan's report as he feared the situation was “not as clear cut as he was saying”.
He understood the Coolnamuck landbank was not just for housing and there had to be masterplan for mixed use for the site's development. This masterplan would have to take into consideration the other side of the River Suir, namely the N24 Clonmel Road, as there was talk about a site for a third bridge across the Suir for the town that would divert traffic coming from the Dungarvan side of Carrick to the N24.
In response, Mr Lonergan said he believed there were “some changes” that now allow the Council to develop that site but added he would have to “go back and check” the matter.
