The Tipperary branch of the Social Democrats is calling for a renewed focus on the water supply in the county

Urgent action is required to address the high number of Boil Water Notices in Tipperary, according to Brendan Guckian, the Chairperson of the Tipperary branch of the Social Democrats.

Figures obtained by Róisín Shortall, co-leader of the Social Democrats, show that since the beginning of 2021, 19 Boil Water Notices have been issued for Tipperary.

This is the second highest nationally, just behind Waterford, with 20 notices in the same period.

Of the 19 issued in Tipperary, there were a number of repeat notices on the same supply. The Galtee region (covering large areas of west Tipperary), Glenary (covering most of Clonmel), Carrick-on-Suir (Lingaun River) and the Horse and Jockey water supply zones were issued with two notices each during this period.

The largest populations impacted in Tipperary were the Galtee region, which supplies water to over 15,000 people; and Glenary, which supplies over 10,000 people.

The Galtee region ranked eighth largest nationally in terms of populations impacted.

In total, 19 local authorities out of 31 had Boil Water Notices issued since the beginning of 2021.

The Tipperary branch of the Social Democrats is calling for a renewed focus on the water supply in Tipperary.

It says it will be engaging with Irish Water to ascertain their plans to address the underlying issues with the county’s water supply.

When such notices are issued, water must be boiled for drinking, drinks made with water, the preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating; brushing of teeth and making of ice, from cooled boiled water.
