New cycle lane infrastructure welcomed for Cashel

New cycle lane infrastructure is to be provided in Cashel

A Cashel Active Travel Scheme has been approved by members of Tipperary/Cashel/Cahir Municipal District.
The members approved the development and welcomed the plans.

The project is designed to develop improved pedestrian/cycling infrastructure to encourage pedestrian and cycle use along a section of the R-639 (Cahir Road) in Cashel.

The project will include the installation of cycle and pedestrian infrastructure to improve active travel along that section of roadway.

The work will involve the removal of existing trees to facilitate the works, the provision of new pedestrian crossings, the removal of the existing hard shoulder from the Tesco roundabout to Deerpark Road.
New and upgraded public lighting will also be provided.

The proposed cycle path will run at both sides of the road for the full length of the scheme.
Members were told that as part of the public consultation process that took place for the project, no concerns about the project were raised by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Cllr Declan Burgess welcomed the development.
He said that it was wonderful to be able to support a project that would deliver the first cycle lane to the town of Cashel.
“We are finally stepping up to the plate to provide safe infrastructure in the town,” said Cllr Burgess.
He told officials that public lighting in the vicinity of Scoil Aonghusa could also be addressed under the project.
He hoped there would be more cycle lanes in the town and said he was disappointed that no cycle lane up to Spafield Crescent was included in the scheme presented.
