On Tuesday 22nd November, a large audience enjoyed an historic event which took place in The Source, Thurles.
Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, Councillor Roger Kennedy accepted two very unique donations to the Tipperary Studies department.
The Norton family, formerly of Glengoole presented the John Norton Collection. John’s varied collection consists of the guns and Sam Browne belt used by him in the War of Independence, whilst he was captain of the H Company of the 1st Battalion, Mid Tipperary Brigade.
During his 1923 internment in Templemore and Gormanstown, John handcrafted brooches, crosses and a ring. He had a great interest in his locality and also collected some military ephemera and two Dead Men’s Pennies awarded to the families of James and Thomas Ryan when they were killed during World War 1.
Councillor Kennedy also accepted Philip Fitzgerald’s handwritten document. Phil, native of Glenough was Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Tipperary Brigade and compiled a chronology of all the notable events in which the 3rd Battalion participated during the period 1916 – 1923, which includes the names of all involved.

Sincere thanks to both families for their generosity. Both are available to view in Tipperary Studies, Thurles. James O’Meara Ryan and Seán Mongey brought the enjoyable evening to a close with some beautiful Irish music.
