Hollywood legend and Oscar winner Russell Crowe is reported to be in Tipperary shooting scenes for his latest movie, The Pope's Exorcist, based on the true story of Fr Gabriele Amorth who carried out over 100,000 exorcisms.

According to Cllr Phyll Bugler, Mr Crowe is filming around the picturesque lakeside village of Ballina.

However, she told this Thursday's meeting of Nenagh Municipal District Council that she would not reveal the exact location of the film shoot.

Cllr Bugler also revealed that the crew behind the highly-successful Smother series shown on RTE1 was due in Ballina towards the end of January.

The actor has already revealed that he was looking forward to shooting scenes around Limerick and is reported to be based in a castle in county Limerick.

Some scenes were shot in Dublin's Trinity College and in Wicklow during the summer.

Mr Crowe has a particular affinity with Limerick and the Mid-West ever since he struck up a friendship with actor Richard Harris while on the set of Gladiator and shared the late Mr Harris's love of rugby and the opportunity to have a few pints in the Limerick pub, Charlie St George's, a firm favourite watering hole of Mr Harris.

Cllr Bugler revealed that Ballina is very much in the spotlight for film production when she called on the council to ensure that tourist signs in the area were maintained and cleaned.

She also appealed for a person to be left in the village on a permanent basis to carry out cleaning and maintenance.

The Fine Gael councillor, who is involved in the local Tidy Towns, told the meeting: "I am just not able to climb up a ladder with a bucket of water."

District engineer Barry Murphy said that he would look at the signage, but told her that the bulk of he council's €15,000 budget for such work had gone to Ballina.

And district manager Marcus O'Connor told her that he thought the council "did a good job in Ballina".

However, he said that the council would not be providing a permanent person to look after maintenance and cleaning.
