Padráic Maher to take over as manager of Thurles Sarsfields senior hurlers in 2023

Padraic Maher

Former Tipperary and Thurles Sarsfields legend Padraic Maher is set to double job next year, as it has been confirmed that he will become the new Thurles Sarsfields senior hurling manager for the 2023 season.

Already committed to Liam Cahill's Tipperary setup as a selector, Maher will now have a presence in both camps which he so brilliantly represented in his playing days in the blue and gold.

It has been an incredibly fast moving 12 months for Maher who was only forced to retire from all hurling at the beginning of this year because of a neck injury, but he now finds himself involved once again, this time on the sideline.

Maher has openly admitted that he has struggled to come to terms with having to retire from the game so suddenly earlier this year, stating as much in the various interviews he has given to local and national press, but he has turned that around quickly to become a big part of his club and county's fortunes for the coming years.

The six time All Star will be joined by his uncle Paddy McCormack who comes in as coach, while former teammate Michael Gleeson along with Brian Stakelum also joins Maher's backroom team.

Sarsfields had a disappointing end to this year's championship back in September when they went out in the preliminary quarter-final stage to Clonoulty Rossmore in Holycross, and they will be hoping the inspirational figure of Maher coming in to take the reins will improve their fortunes for next year.
