Construction is to begin before Christmas on a replacement building for the South Tipperary Community Nursing Home at St Anthony’s on the Western Road in Clonmel.

The brand-new building will have a capacity of 50 beds, it has been announced.

Fianna Fáil TD Jackie Cahill has welcomed the commencement of construction on a number of major health facilities in various HSE regions, including Clonmel.

He said he was delighted after receiving confirmation from the Department of Health that five of the seven public private partnership (PPP) sites on a number of major health facilities in various regions will see construction commence before Christmas.

The Community Nursing Homes PPP Project will deliver the residential care facilities, comprising both short and long stay beds for older persons, at facilities across the country.

Deputy Cahill stated: “One of these locations is the St Anthony’s site in Clonmel, where we will see the construction of a brand-new replacement build community nursing home, with a capacity of 50 beds. The overall PPP, which will see seven different projects delivered across the country, would have cost the state some €600 million to deliver independently.

“This agreement will see a 25-year lease taken out on these properties, after which time full ownership of each property will rest with the HSE. At all times, all facilities will be operated by the HSE.

“I would like to thank Ministers Stephen Donnelly and Mary Butler for their work on this project, and I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of local councillor Siobhán Ambrose in relation to the delivery for Clonmel.

“This is something myself and Siobhán have worked closely on and I am pleased to see progress being made in this regard,” Deputy Cahill added.
