Call for plaques to be erected to remember famous citizens of Clonmel

Famous sons and daughters of Clonmel should be remembered with plaques that could be erected on houses and buildings where they had lived, the town’s first citizen has suggested.

District Mayor Pat English has stated that such plaques could be erected to remember famous RTÉ broadcaster and former Nationalist editor Tommy O’Brien, who lived on O’Connell Street; and famous musician Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, who lived in the building now occupied by his family’s O’Sullivan Insurances in Mitchel Street.

He said there were a lot more houses where people of note had lived.

This was something that was commonplace in other cities and towns, the Mayor added, when he addressed a recent meeting of Clonmel Borough District.

In her report to the meeting, District Administrator Carol Creighton said that Tipperary County Council’s cultural team (comprising the Director of Cultural Services, the County Librarian, the Heritage Officer, Arts Officer and Museum Curator) would consider any applications and would make a recommendation to the relevant Municipal District Council, which would consider the applications and the report from the cultural team before deciding on the matter.
