Inquest set to probe death of Belfast teen who died in hospital after assault

An inquest is set to examine the death of a Belfast teenager who died in hospital following an assault.

Fionntan McGarvey, 18, had been in the first year of an engineering degree at Queen’s University Belfast at the time of the incident outside a bar on Finaghy Road North in the early hours of December 27, 2021.

He was taken to hospital but later died in January 2022.

An inquest into his death is in the preliminary stages.

A brief hearing at Belfast Coroner’s Court on Friday heard that the disclosure process was under way and that expert witnesses were being consulted.

Another preliminary hearing is set to take place on May 6.
